I am in the process of buying new wheels for my Rollerblade Astro 50's (my wheels are pretty bad right now). When I'm skating, I get a lot of pain on the bottom of my foot as if there's not enough padding in the boot. Do I need to buy some kind of cushioning or do I need new skates? My skates are about a year old.

Also, I'm buying harder wheels this time (84A) because the wheels that come with these skates don't last long. How long can I expect the harder wheels to last? Should I buy spares?

Thanks!

A related question I have is this...I'm debating on stocking up on wheels (to total enough to save on shipping) vs. buying not as many wheels but getting some bearings (which will total enough too)

A rollerblading friend told me he thinks my bearings are fine though - he said they sound fine.

What would be the better choice---stocking up on wheels or buying wheels and bearings?

Get a pair of Superfeet inserts, that should take care of at least most of the pain. They'll help both in padding and in supporting the foot, lack of support could be the cause of the pain.

Harder wheels in general will last longer, they can also add speed, but at a cost of comfort as they will transfer more of the road vibrations to your feet.

Spare wheels & bearings are always a plus if you skate alot.

Thank you for the information...I'll check those out.

I would say go for a pair of superfeet inserts, that should solve your problem. I experienced a similar situation as yours.

Superfeet would be my recommendation as well. Your bearings will likely last for a while so stocking up on wheels isn't a bad idea if you had to pick one.

Great posts !

I'd say be very careful you don't do lasting damage to your feet.

Harder wheels last longer usually, can also increase the speed, but the cost of convenience as they move more and more on foot vibrations. Superfit get a couple more that should take care of, at least most of the pain. They will help as well as padding and support for the foot, the lack of support can cause pain.

Some persons with foot pain buy a longer skate than their foot sizing would suggest. It's possible to fill the empty toe space with some foam. It's possible that the longer boot has more vertical room in the mid-foot area. Mid-foot compression seems to be a significant problem for many skaters.

As another poster mentioned, adjusting frames may help as well as you may be pronating or supinating too much to one side of the boot.

Harder wheels will last longer but how long will be determined by how much and where you skate. If t-stopping, etc... Would be impossible for me to answer that question and be accurate so you rest assured that harder wheels grip less, last longer, roll faster and but absorb bumps less.

Softer wheels grip more, causing a slower roll But provide more control and wear faster.

Thanks!
