I am looking for a new / different method of exercise, so I am taking up inline skating. I am a complete newbie.
All we have in town is a Sports Authority. I went there last night and tried on a pair of K2 Exo 6.1's and a pair of Rollerblade Zetras. The K2s were extremely comfortable. The Rollerblades had a "pinch point" near the front of my right foot (on top of the base of my big toe) that obviously would have been annoying.
Anyway, I am looking to buy a pair online. I called the nearest skate shop (in Atlanta), and they were hesitant to recommend a pair since they recommended that I come in and try some on to see what fit best. I know that is the best thing, but they are 2.5 hours away, and I don't think I'll be able to get up there anytime real soon. However, I am anxious to get started.
As far as skates, I am looking at the following, but I am open to other suggestions:
Rollerblade Lightning 6
Rollerblade Crossfire 90 (maybe the 4D system)
K2 VO2 Max
I guess these are a little fast for me, but I want to get decent skates. It's kind of a catch-22 really.
Is there any kind of consistency in one brand's fit along all their models (see Rollerblade problem above)? The 4D idea (Crossfire) and being able to adjust the size sounds cool, but does that mean a weaker frame. I am leaning towards the K2s since I liked the Exo's fit, but I am worried they may not hold up (softboot) and I have read in numerous places about pebbles/small stones being a real problem with the K2 VO2 Max (getting stuck between the rear wheel and brake).
I wear 11.5-12 in shoes, but almost always wear 12s in athletic shoes. The pairs I tried on last night were 12s and seemed the right fit. I have an average width foot.
Next, I am not real sure which helmet, pads, etc. to buy. I have a helmet that I use when mtn. biking (Trek). Will that suffice or do I need something else?
Anyway, sorry this is such a long post. I appreciate any help/tips any of you can provide.
TIA
