View Full Version : Wear limit - they're not kidding!

On Monday I noticed that my brake was worn flush with the line marked "Wear Limit". I figured OK, I'll change it when I get around to it, maybe this weekend. Tuesday, I noticed that braking sounded like dragging an iron shoe across the pavement. Took a look after the skates were off and found I'd worn half the head off the mounting bolt. It started out round-headed and now it's flat with an awkward bevel. I guess Salomon's serious about that limit.

Let's see if you can still say that when you're 50 and you can't take a fall the way you used to.

Here's the strange part: The factory-original brake was worn down to the bolt in 500 miles. Here I am 900 miles after that and the replacement brake still has some life in it. I could have sworn the original was a standard brake, just like the replacements, so why did it have half the life?

nor I nor anyone i know uses brakes. We have all taken them off. Its more convenient to turn the wheel sideways, which will not wear down the wheel drastically either. Why worry about a break, just loose it.

My town is super hilly and my brake has saved my hide a few times. My 2nd one is wearing much slower than the first. It may be different material, or maybe I use this one less without knowing it.

Not that I am an expert in the skates, but it is quite common to source replacement parts (including wear parts) from different manufacturers or lots. It is very possible that the replacement pads are more durable, even from the viewpoint that people that replace their brakes would want something that was tougher. Like many, I used my brakes as a dog toy.
